II. How Does It Work? - Passive Solar Cooling

Passive solar cooling involves solar shading, solar control glazing, natural venitlation, and night ventilation.

Solar Shading

The two types of solar shading are internal and external shading.  Internal shading uses blinds or shades to trap sunlight, whereas external shading uses shades, balconies, and trees to block out sunlight.  The picture on the left shows an example of external solar shading.  The picture below shows an example of internal solar shading.

Solar Control Glazing

Glaze absorbs the radiation and reflects it back out.

Natural Ventilation

The two types of natural ventilation are cross ventilation and stack ventilation.  Cross ventilation involves the wind flowing through one vent and out the other.  Stack ventilation creates compartments for warm air to rise and be rejuvenated by cooler air.  The picture on the left shows an example of cross ventilation.  The picture below shows an example of stack ventilation.

Night Ventilation

Night ventilation involves windows that allow cool air to flow into a room throughot the night.  Concrete soffit, also known as termodeck, lines the ceiling to absorb heat during the day.
